Our Story

Meet Dr. Mugabe

Dr. Mugabe is a Namibian herbalist and cultural guide with ancestral roots connected to ancient Ovambo royalty. Born into a family of healers, he learned the sacred art of traditional medicine from both his mother, an esteemed healer in Namibia descended from King Shikongo shaKalulu of the Ondonga Kingdom, and his father, a respected traditional practitioner in Angola whose lineage traces back to Hanyanga yaNembungu, one of the earliest known leaders of the Ovambo people.

Raised within these traditions across both countries, Dr. Mugabe learned the art of natural healing from elders who passed down knowledge of roots, seeds, plants, and their uses. He specialises in remedies for chronic wounds, snake bites, skin care, and general wellness.

Alongside herbal healing, Dr. Mugabe works as a Freelance TourGuide, sharing the cultures, landscapes, and history of Namibia. He speaks more than 13 languages, including Oshiwambo, Otjiherero, Afrikaans, English, German, Portuguese, and several other African tongues, allowing him to connect deeply with visitors from across the world.

The Legacy of Hanyanga yaNembungu

Proto-King of the Ovambo People

Hanyanga yaNembungu was one of the earliest known leaders of the Ovambo people before the creation of separate kingdoms like Evale and Kwanyama. He lived in southern Angola, mainly in the Cuvelai–Evale region, during the time when Ovambo families were still forming their first organized settlements.

As a respected clan leader from the Nembungu lineage, many Ovambo groups trace part of their ancestry to him. Under his leadership, the community grew strong in cattle farming, millet cultivation, and iron-working. Hanyanga helped unite early clans and guided them to new lands in the Cuvelai basin, an area rich in water and grazing.

Evale Kingdom

The northern territory that emerged from Hanyanga's settlements, preserving ancient Ovambo traditions.

Kwanyama Kingdom

The southern territory that became one of the most powerful Ovambo kingdoms, known for its warrior traditions.

Because of this, both Evale and Kwanyama oral traditions remember him as an important "proto-king," even though he ruled before formal kingship titles existed. His leadership set the cultural and political base for the later Ovambo states that developed in Angola and northern Namibia.

"Hanyanga yaNembungu is remembered today as a key ancestor who helped shape the early identity, migration, and settlement of the Ovambo people in southern Angola."
